Athlete of the Month – July 2020 – Valarie Yoemans

Yes with two “a’s”!
Within minutes of being around Valarie, you will be laughing. She has a great sense of humor and tackles triathlon with the attitude of having fun.

She has been doing tri’s for seven years now and attributes her inspiration for this sport to her husband, you may know him, Jeremy! She says, ” I always think about him when I want to give up during training and it gives me the grit to go on. I want him to be proud of me, and I want to be a good example for our 13 year old daughter, Mia.” Isn’t that just the sweetest. That is a good testament to her attitude and approach she takes to this sport.

Also, this is good for us to thing about, a great racing tip she offers, ” I will say what my Uncle always says, “If you can’t win, then make the person in front of you PUKE!” This is a keeper for sure!

Athlete of the Month – June 2020 – Dustin Givens

Dustin has been into triathlon for three years now, and has taken off with it!

He started with the Sampson County Super Sprint in 2018, where he had learned to swim 2 months before and had purchased his bike one month before.
Dustin says, ” I barely made it through the 250 yd swim and thought I was going to die on the short bike. It was one of the more humbling experiences of my life. I was hooked instantly.”

He then went on to make 2019 his year,by completing his first full Ironman!

When asked, who inspires you, Dustin wrote, ” Volunteers at races. By the end of a lot of races I’m feeling pretty rough. It always seems like the energetic folks in the last miles give me a boost to keep going that is more powerful than any snack or gel I could have.”

When training with Dustin, you will always see him smiling and being super friendly to new and old friends.

Congratulations Dustin!

Athlete of the Month – May 2020 – Julie Haviland

Say “hi” to Julie!
Julie is a “pro” at triathlon, having started in the mid 90’s. She took a few years off when she had her two children, but was back soon after. When you see Julie, you will see a smile, a calm and determination. As an emergency physician, she says her training is her time alone to decompress and listen to the sounds of nature. She says her best triathlon tip would be, “when training, stay organized. Write down what n eeds to be done that week and figure out what day it can be fit in and how early you are willing to wake up.”

Her favorite mantra is, ” Believe that you can. Decide that you will.”

Great tips Julie!
