Say “hi” to John!
Meet John! John is a physical therapist by day, triathlete, all the time! John has been at this sport for only two years and is already accomplished! He finished second place in his age group, at The Great Floridian 140.6! Even more impressive, is that his first triathlon was Rev 3 Williamsburg 70.3! Wow, way to jump right in!

Say “hi” to Lizzie!
Meet Lizzie! Lizzie is an active member of the team, you will most likely see her at many of the local races with a smile on. She has been doing triathlons for 11 years now! Her favorite triathlon is Beach 2 Battleship (now NC 70.3). Lizzie says her go to mantra is the bible verse, ” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She enjoys a bagel with peanut butter as her pre-race meal and uses NBS on the course. She is inspired by her husband, who is there for her in every way. She hopes to complete a full ironman as a bucket list item.
Way to go Lizzie!!

Say “hi” to Tom!
Tom is a staple on the team, you see him at races, training rides and usually it is with his wife, Kim (pictured with him in case you didn’t know who that was, haha). Tom has been doing triathlons for 15 years now, and not slowing down! His favorite race was the Racine 70.3, “I liked the swim in Lake Michigan and the run in the bluffs.” He also recommends “80/20 Triathlon”, (Matt Fitzgerald) and Joe Friel as a good source for training. If you have a moment to chat with Tom, you will find his witty humor entertaining and that he doesn’t take himself too seriously in triathlon, but enjoys taking training, “slow and easy”. Thanks Tom!

Say “hi” to Kayce!
You know her by her smile, laugh and infectious positive attitude. She joined the team last year, and when she is around you, she has something positive and uplifting to say. She has been doing triathlon for one year, and in that year, completed NC 70.3. Kayce is inspired by Ian and Owen Layton. They are twin brothers. Ian has Cerebral Palsy and together we run races with Ainsley’s Angels of America. She says that getting those brick workouts are key when training for a triathlon. Great advice Kayce!

Marty is the Director of Track & Field, Cross Country and Women’s Triathlon @ Guilford College, and has been involved with triathlon since 1991.
His first triathlon was Ocean City Triathlon in New Jersey, he prefers the 70.3 and full distances the most.
A great racing/training tip from Marty, “Enjoy the journey as you prepare for your races and don’t focus solely on your results in regards to placement. We all participate in this slightly absurd sport for different reasons and we each define our own successes! ”
Which is a great tip when training with a team and racing together, it is easy to compare yourself with teammates.
Marty has a favorite mantra which is,“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined” Henry David Thoreau
