Athlete of the Month – Sept 2017 – David Jones

Name: David Jones
Age: 59
Occupation: Primary Patent Examiner

Years doing relays and mountain bike racing? 3+ years
First race? Mt. Bike race at Country Park and a relay TRI at Lake Brandt on a road bike.
Your favorite triathlon or mountain bike race? Mt Bike race at Owl’s Roost

Meal the night before race? Most things within reason; just try not to overeat. Most Mt. Bike races are in the evening, so I try to eat a good lunch.
Pre-Race Meal? I eat light (toast or a small bowl of oatmeal early) and add a power gel about 1/2 hour to an hour before the race for morning rides. Just the gel for evening races after eating a good lunch.
Race Nutrition? Water or cut energy drink since most of my rides are generally an hour or less in length.

Favorite motivational training song? None really.

Favorite mantra? If I am fearful then I am on the right track!

Key Workout? Distance riding and hills the week before and interval riding a few days before. Before the race I try to do a good warmup; trying to get my heart rate up to near max effort; this is especially true for Mt. Bike racing where it is full throttle the whole of the ride.

Best Triathlon training or racing tip? In the race when it hurts that is when I push harder (to a point) because that is where others will slow down (usually up hills and just over the top of a hill, etc.).

Triathlon literature or other sources of information? I try to look online and get various opinions and read various articles. Gives me less hype and a more balanced knowledge of the subject matter.

Who inspires you? My wife, Neala!

Future goal? Ride my bike across the US before I get ancient!!
