Athlete of the Month – May 2020 – Julie Haviland

Name: Julie Haviland
Age: 45 on May 6
Occupation: Emergency Physician with the Cone hospitals. I am also a mom to 2 fabulous kids (James and Grace), and wife to a supportive husband, Grant, who is a dentist in Randleman.

Years doing triathlon? 20+ on and off. I started in the mid-90s, took a few years off when I had kids, and then started again about 6 or 7 years ago.

First Triathlon? One of my med school friends asked if I wanted to do a triathlon with her. I said sure; not really knowing what to do. I borrowed a mountain bike for the race and put my helmet on backwards. I am sure I looked ridiculous. Needless to say, it was not a PR, but I loved it!

Your favorite triathlon? My first HIM in 2014. I had taken off a few years when I had my kids. I came back to training with a goal to get back into the sport and to challenge myself the way I have never done before. Finishing that race felt really special.

Meal the night before race? Pasta
Pre-Race Meal? Kashi O’s with strawberries, banana, and homemade almond milk.

Race Nutrition? Huma gels for the run. They are easy for me to tolerate and are not too sweet. Picky bars or homemade date/cashew bars for the bike.

Favorite motivational training song? My training is my alone time and my time to decompress from my job and life’s stresses. I treasure the moments with just my thoughts and hearing the sounds of nature. So, I don’t listen to music when training.

Favorite mantra? Believe that you can. Decide that you will.
Key Workout? Bricks! Also, Coach Matt Clancy’s power bike classes.

Best Triathlon training or racing tip? When training, stay organized. Write down what needs to be done that week and figure out what day it can be fit in and how early you are willing to wake up.

Triathlon literature or other sources of information? This is not specific to tris, but nutrition is super important. I love the 2 cookbooks by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky (Run Fast Eat Slow and Run Fast Cook Fast Eat Slow).

Who inspires you? Everyone that shows up to race. I have met some wonderful people in the triathlon community. Everyone cheers each other on and are supportive to one another. We need more of that in life!

Future goal or bucket list race? I would love to do a full Ironman someday. Maybe when the kids are in college and out of the house.
