MEET the Board
Royce Scrivano
President
“Hi, I’m Royce! I’m the tall guy that’s usually cheering WAY too loud, when I’m not racing myself.”
Royce’s favorite local race is the Nat Greene’s Revenge tri at Lake Brandt, “since it was my FIRST one for me and for my future wife!” In 2021, he won the overall Trivium Multisport series for males. In 2022, he be racing my first 70.3 in Chattanooga with TTT-mates.
Royce has been on the team since early 2019. “I joined since I heard great things about it on a local Performance Bicycles group ride (I miss that store!).”
His goals as a board member include: attracting more and new faces to our monthly events, building relationships with our sponsors, and being a role model for new teammates.
Outside of triathlon, Royce is a huge NASCAR/motorsports fan. He is originally from Philadelphia and LOVES cheesesteaks!
Walt Maxwell
Vise President
Walt joined the TTT almost 10 years ago. When he joined, he had not yet completed a triathlon, but saw the opportunity to surround myself with resources and accomplished triathletes. He felt that this group was “as welcoming back then as it is today and the mission the same: bring athletes together and support them in their triathlon and related multi-sport goals.”
Walt has an impressive race history and many notable finishes: “I have many great memories of racing in Wilmington, NC. It was there that I did my first FULL distance race (Beach to Battleship) and many half distance races, both as B2B and IM70.3. Ironman Canada provided some of the best scenery as well as my first Mike Riley finish. Overall, I have also enjoyed my races at IM Florida and would probably count those races among my favorites.” For his 2022 race plans, Walt is returning to Ironman Canada (postponed 2X from 2020) along with some half distance races and finishing off the season with 3 triathlons in 3 days (a total of 300 miles) at the Florida Extreme Triathlon!
Walt joined the board in late 2021 and is working hard to give back to those who have helped him throughout his triathlon journey. “It is important for me to understand all those who are new and/or working toward a significant goal for the coming year. Supporting them, providing encouragement as well as training opportunities will be my way of helping those in the way the TTT helped me across so many finish lines. For those who are new to the team or to the multi-sport lifestyle, it is important to share your goals as well as your challenges with others on the team. Together, we can find a way to support you and provide the resources you need to meet your individual goals. The team, and its members are here to support each other!”
Arlene Barbosa
Treasurer
Arlene was introduced to the sport of triathlon when her husband asked her to do a race with him. She started doing them as a "bucket list" item, but quickly realized how incredibly blessed she was to "tri". After years of competing, she now gets to enjoy her kids competing, racing with friends and introducing friends to the sport. Arlene has participated in Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman Distance events, along with countless running events, her favorites being Nat Greene’s Tri and the Myrtle Beach half marathon.
Arlene was drawn to TTT in 2017 after witnessing the support and camaraderie the team offered. She has held the position as team treasurer for several years and maintains her role in 2022 with the goal to “grow the team even more and offer more team building experiences.”
Outside of training, Arlene holds a degree in civil engineering, has been married for 20 years this September. She has 3 kids, (Ana 14, twins Oscar and David 12) and has been an instructor at the YMCA for 20 years. She enjoys working for Junction 311 racing, and this past year, her family adopted their first rescue dog, Midnight!
Ricky Currier
IT/Communications Chair
Ricky has been with TTT since 2018 when he moved to Greensboro with his wife, Chelsea, dog, 3 cats, and turtle. “I joined because I had dreams of doing a half Ironman. A few short years later and I have done 2 half’s and a full Ironman!” Ricky enjoys working on projects around the house and sipping good whiskey.
For 2022 Ricky plans to maintain some of the fitness from the Ironman while enjoying shorter local races. As TTT’s tech guru, he will also play a key role in launching our new, user-friendly website which will help connect members outside of Facebook.
Kara Davis
Director of Social Media
Kara joined TTT in 2019 and the board in 2021 as director of social media. As a former competitive swimmer, Kara had always had her eye on competing in triathlon, but it seemed like an unattainable goal. After moving to Greensboro, she had heard of a local triathlon team (TTT) and signed up for that and NC 70.3 on the same day (go big or go home). She was glad that she had team support, as she now needed to train.
Her favorite races include Belew’s Lake Triathlon and IMNC 70.3. Her 2022 race schedule is still in the works, but includes Oak Island Marathon, 70.3 Augusta (Maine, not Georgia) and IM 70.3 Worlds in St. George, UT. Her goals for the TTT in 2022 is to collaboratively plan and promote team events to increase participation within our community.
Kara is originally from New Jersey, married to Jason, a mom of 3 boys 8 and under and 2 dogs. She is a former DI swimmer and a RN working in the ICU.
Erica James
Director of Membership
Erica joined the board director of membership in late 2021 and has played an important role in onboarding new and returning TTT members. Her goals for the 2022 triathlon season include: continuing to be involved with the team, meeting new faces, and having an awesome season!
Her favorite races include destination races with friends. In 2022 she is looking forward to the local races within the TTT series and competing in her first 70.3, IMNC.
Outside of triathlon, Erica is a fur mom to Pete, Cody, and Black. An avid gardener, dental hygienist, and improv comedian who dabbles in standup.
Keith Gardiner
Team Events Coordinator
Keith started doing Tri's in 2017 to seek a new challenge. An avid cyclist for many years, Keith completed long distance cycling event, Paris–Brest–Paris in 2007 (1200k or approx. 772 miles in under 90 hours) and unsupported endurance cycling event: Randonneuring twice (200, 300, 400, 600k within one year), along with countless century rides on local roads. He has been a member of TTT for 4 years and enjoys being part of a great group of like-minded people trying to help each other get better in triathlon and multisport.
Keith looks forward to starting his season off with the North East Duathlon (even though the weather does sometimes not cooperate). “It is a fun race and it is great to get everyone back together again and start racing!” His 2022 race schedule includes the NE Duathlon, and he is still in the planning process for the rest of his race season, focusing on races with duathlon or pool swim format.
“[In 2022] I plan to keep the recipes coming that can help fuel your success, and organize training events that can help members of our team at every level, no matter if they are doing their first tri this year, or have already completed full distance triathlons already. We can all improve together.”
Keith is married to Susan, has 2 boys, both fully grown and both chefs, and a granddaughter and grandson. He has 2 dogs and 8 chickens and likes to garden. While not a hobby, Keith does enjoy cooking and has been teaching others to do the same for the past 27 years at GTCC. He is looking forward to getting back into woodworking a little more this year and work on some home improvements.
Cary Maycock
Board Member at Large
If you have been to any local race, chances are you have seen Cary on the course, or the podium. Cary has been a member of TTT since the mid-2000’s and a key member of our local triathlon community. She joins the board in 2022 with a goal of encouraging team members to “enjoy the camaraderie of training and racing together no matter what level or distance you are participating in.”
Cary’s favorite races include: Belew’s Lake Triathlon and Chattanooga 70.3/140.6. Her strongest races have been Raleigh 70.3 in 2018 and Williamsburg 70.3 2019. Her upcoming races in 2022 include the Trivium Series, Blue Ridge 70.3, and potentially Knoxville SwimRun.
Cary’s husband Joel is also triathlete. She has 3 grown kids, and has worked as a PT at Moses Cone for the past 30 years.
